Rain forecast for today so decided to bus ourselves to a place called Clintmains a few miles east of the next Abbey, Dryburgh Abbey, near St Boswells. Confused? Well, we were when we walked back and thought we were in one town when we were in different one. We got dropped off and walked back westerly towards Melrose. The river Tweed is very pretty and interesting. Here are wild cherries growing along it's bank. I believe they may have been introduced around the time of the Romans, not sure. Some of the fruit were ripe and very nice.
A very nice crop on the river flats
Dryburgh Abbey. Not as big as Melrose Abbey and couldn't, climb up in it but you could go under it into some of the rooms and cellars. Just as good.
That done we continued to walk back towards Melrose and passed the gateway to the Abbey's orchard. It had a huge stone wall around the paddock. Not a fruit tree left in it. Nice gateway.
Then off past the Rhymer's Stone where Thomas the Rhymer is said to have met the Queen of the Fairies. (She/he wasn't about today). Then off past the roman fort and marching camps then to the Trimontium Roman Fort. All under crops and couldn't see anything. Not far away were the Leaderfoot Bridges spanning the river Tweed. Very impressive I must say.
View of the river Tweed.
Back to Melrose and starting to feel the walk and we didn't even have the heavy packs on. Gone soft. Had to pay for the wifi at the hostel so hit the pub the George and Abbotsford where wifi free. Had a lovely meal (this must stop). Annette had a huge lamb roast. Downloaded a few days worth of photos on the blog and back to the hostel to find that the rooms mucked up but they managed to put us in a 4 dorm room by ourselves. Nice people running it and it is in a large old house.
