Every time we tried to stop for breakfast the midges made it impossible. Walked to a pub at Rowardennan and had a full Scottish breakfast as we had deserved it by then. After finishing it I don't think I'll be having another one. Too heavy when you have to get back up and walk again.
Snack time, about 30 seconds before the net had to go back down.
Off through regrowth forests of mainly birch trees where they had cut down the conifer trees. The birch tree grows here like the wattle tree at home. Everywhere.
Came across an inlet and there was a body laid out on the jetty. I’d say he had been there all night. The lock along here is very popular with people coming from Glasgow and camping for the weekend. Unfortunately they are mainly young males and the rubbish they leave is astounding and not a good look. There were no rubbish bins anywhere. We were glad when we walked away from the lock.
Yesterday and today we kept seeing these two cheeky Scotsmen. We seemed to pass them every time they stopped for a smoke. Here Annette gives them a wide birth. Rough lads but seemed ok.
The scenery varied today and this section was step and rocky on the side of the loch and you had to take care or you could end up in the drink. It reminded us a lot of the Overland Walk in Tasmania.
Early this morning we had passed through heaps of bluebells under birches. Here is a photo of bluebells and ferns. Annette says to the girls from her work, “Eat your hearts out”
Towards the end of the day we got caught out in the open by a heavy shower of rain and by the time we got on our wet weather gear we were wet. The end of the loch in sight.
Kept walking until 7pm when we got to the camping ground at Inverarnan. Didn't feel like pitching the tent in the rain and cold so the good lady there rang around and got us a bed in the pub for the night. Just another 10 minutes walk but boy were we in zombie mode by then. Got to the the pub and found it to be very very old. Inside was an eye opener. It hadn't been properly cleaned in the bar for 200 years or so. Every thing was as it would have been then. Showered and just made it down in time for dinner. Funny thing was I went to the bar to order and this Scotsman ordered a Fosters. I thought I hadn't heard right but sure enough he got one. The meal was huge and we couldn't finish it. It had been a very long day and we really should have stopped about 5 hours earlier. Annette's knee has began to play up and I wasn't surprised. The pub was meant to be haunted but it didn't worry me and I was off with the fairies in no time surrounded by wet gear hanging off the four poster bed.
I'm starting to get worried about you two......
ReplyDeleteAnnette would prefer to be bitten all over by scouts and Graeme is going to bed with faries!!!!
(by the way Graeme I think they prefer to be called Gays these days..)
