This morning the hot water in the shower not working. Fixed quickly enough but late leaving. Off to find bus times and then off on the bus to Melrose. Passed through same pretty villages and country along the river Tweed. An American lady spoke to us on the bus as she saw us get on with the large packs and she quizzed us on what we were doing. She was over here on a three week holiday without her husband and four children. Nice lady. Seem to be meeting a lot of them. Just as well I'm already with one. Arrived in Melrose and unable to find the hostel so set up camp in the caravan park. Very neat and clean. Photo of the town.
Visited the Roman Museum. Apparently there was a large fort situated east of town near Newstead in a farmers paddock. There used to be a lot of these attractive blokes running around here a few years ago chatting up the local girls.
Well maybe not. Next a visit to Melrose Abbey. Pretty big and in ruins. Steps leading to the bell tower. They were built inside the walls and you can see that they were well used.
View from up near the top.
More spiral stairs. I love them. This one has an interesting twist.
The Abbey.
Not sure why they put these on the outside.
The ship Inn. They had a really good display of hanging baskets as did a lot of the buildings. Decided to have dinner there.
View of the river.
Another bloody bridge. They make ours at home look cheap.
Found the hostel and booked in for two nights. Back at the caravan park and nearly all of the people tenting are our age or older. Two younger Australians are doing the Lands End walk from the bottom of the UK to the top and taking 6 months. Maybe next year? One of the other couples were walking the St Cuthbert's Way. See we are not the only silly buggers.
Well Graeme, good to see that the OSTT equipment they have is just as up to date as ours!
